How do I know whether I have a J1, J2 or J3 bell housing?

The J-code is stamped into the casting of your original Toyota A340 automatic bell housing. Check the casting before selecting. If you need a J3 plate you can request one after placing the order — the kits are the same price.

Can I use the front mount shifter in a Supra MKIV?

No. In an MK4 the front mount position puts the shifter in the center of the radio. Use the rear mount shifter.

Is a driveshaft included?

No. Driveshafts are ordered separately. Steel and aluminum are both built on 3 inch tube, and carbon is also offered.

What is included in the base kit?

J1/J2 adapter plate, flywheel, transmission crossmember with mount, pilot bearing, bearing rings and hardware.

What do I need to supply myself?

What do the LHD and RHD master cylinder options mean?

They set the master cylinder bore and brand for left or right hand drive — 3/4 or 7/8 inch Tilton for LHD, 3/4 or 7/8 inch Wilwood for RHD.

What are the torque specs for the adapter plate and bell housing?

Adapter plate countersunk bolts torque to 30 ft-lb and the bell housing torques to 40 ft-lb. Both values are engraved on the bottom of the plate, though the bell housing covers the engraving once installed.

Should I use thread locker on the adapter plate bolts?

No. The countersunk bolts are small and only torque to 30 ft-lb, so aggressive thread locker means stripping the heads the next time the plate comes off for service.

Do I need to cut the spud to fit the adapter plate?

No. The recess on the ASE plate is machined deep enough to clear it. This was addressed by a design change years ago, but the old advice about cutting it still circulates on forums.

Does the bell housing need notching?

Only on the J3, where the thinner plate leaves less vertical height and the clutch lines interfere. J1 and J2 plates are thicker and need no notching.

Shifter

Use the rear mount shifter in a Supra MKIV. The front mount shifter cannot be used in this chassis — it sits so far forward that it lands in the center of the radio.
