Adapting a 2JZGTE, 2JZ, 1JZ, or 2JZGE engine to a 350Z CD009 6-speed transmission, using a J3 bell housing.

Hardware for the slave, adapter plate, flywheel, and bell housing, plus a pilot bearing adapter bushing and a new input shaft seal.

Why is the J3 plate thinner than the J1 J2 plate?

Because the J3 transmission is significantly deeper, so the plate is machined thinner to compensate.

Does the J3 bell housing need to be notched?

Yes. The thinner J3 plate leaves less vertical height around the bell housing, so the clutch lines interfere. Hold the bell housing up to the plate, mark where the lines and fittings want to pass through, and grind the notches out. J1 and J2 plates do not require notching because they are thicker and leave enough clearance.

What are the torque specs?

Adapter plate countersunk bolts torque to 30 ft-lb and the bell housing torques to 40 ft-lb. Both are engraved on the bottom of the plate.

What bolt lengths does the J3 plate use?

The J3 plate uses 50mm long bolts in 8x1.25 thread pitch, plus two short 30mm bolts. J1 and J2 plates use 70mm bolts instead. Bell housing bolt holes are 10x1.5.

Should I use Loctite on the adapter plate bolts?

No. The countersunk bolts are small and only torque to 30 ft-lb. Aggressive thread locker means stripping the heads the next time the plate comes off for service.

Do I need to cut the spud?

No. The recess on the ASE plate is machined deep enough to clear it. This was addressed by a design change years ago, but the old advice still circulates.

When do I install the slave cylinder?

Before bolting the bell housing to the adapter plate. Once the bell housing is on you cannot get the slave into position or route the lines.

J3 specific — the bell housing needs notching

The J3 plate is thinner than the J1/J2 plate because the J3 transmission is significantly deeper. That leaves less vertical height around the bell housing, so the clutch lines interfere and the housing must be notched.

Method: hold the bell housing up to the plate, mark with a sharpie where the lines and fittings want to pass through, and grind the notches out. J1 and J2 plates do not require this.
