What's the difference between the J1/J2 and J3 options?

These specify which Toyota A340 automatic bell housing you are mating to. The J-code is stamped into the casting of your original bell housing. The J3 plate is thinner because the J3 transmission is significantly deeper.

What are the torque specs for the CD009 adapter plate?

Adapter plate countersunk bolts torque to 30 ft-lb and the bell housing torques to 40 ft-lb. Both values are engraved on the bottom of the plate, though the bell housing covers the engraving once installed.

What size are the adapter plate bolts?

All plate bolts are 8x1.25 thread pitch. The J3 plate uses 50mm long bolts and the J1/J2 plates use 70mm long bolts. Both use two short 30mm bolts. Bell housing bolt holes are 10x1.5 if you need to chase one with a tap.

Do I need to cut down the input shaft tip?

Usually not, and it depends on your crankshaft rather than the transmission. Look inside the crankshaft: if the outer corner is cylindrical and square at 90 degrees, do nothing. If it is rounded, which is common on VVTi cranks, either tip it back about 3/16 to 1/4 inch or put an aggressive bevel around the tip.

Should I use Loctite on the adapter plate bolts?

No. The countersunk bolts are small and only torque to 30 ft-lb. Applying thread locker aggressively means stripping the bolt heads the next time the plate needs to come off for service. The factory bolts arrive with a little Loctite from the assembly line, which is why the lower ones resist on removal, but it should not be reapplied.

Do I use a gasket or just silicone?

Use the gasket. Reuse it with a thin layer of Permatex all the way around, applied to the side that mates to the adapter plate rather than the transmission side. A thin layer is enough. Some installers skip the gasket and use silicone alone, but that is not the recommended method.

How do I install the input shaft seal?

A brand new seal ships with the kit. The easiest method is to use the pilot bushing as a press, since it is a close enough fit to drive the seal square. Push until the seal seats against the machined surface, which stops it at the correct depth.

When do I install the slave cylinder?

Before bolting the bell housing to the adapter plate. Once the bell housing is installed you cannot get the slave cylinder into position or route the lines, and it will have to come back off.

Does the bell housing need notching?

Only on the J3. The J3 plate is thinner because the J3 transmission is deeper, leaving less vertical height, so the clutch lines interfere. Hold the bell housing to the plate, mark where the lines and fittings pass, and grind the notches. J1 and J2 plates are thicker and need no notching.

Q: Do I need to cut the spud to fit the CD009 adapter plate?

No. The recess on the ASE plate is machined deep enough to clear the spud. This was addressed by a design change years ago, but the old advice about cutting it still circulates on forums and in videos.
